About
Welcome to Engipreneur 2.0, the second version of my effort to create an online community of entrepreneurial-minded professionals. Here you will find ideas, tips, tools, support, and a forum for collaboration that will help you excel in your career.
You don’t need to own your own engineering business (I don’t), nor do you even need to be an engineer to get value from this community. But, I do ask that you actively participate. The community currently has two components, the Engipreneur Blog (this is where you are currently) and the Engipreneur Group on LinkedIn.
- Engipreneur Blog. Located at engipreneur.com, the blog will be updated regularly with helpful advice, news, insights, and discussions on a variety of topics focused on applying entrepreneurial principles to professional service businesses: business development, networking, technology, recruiting, leadership, management, etc. Be sure to subscribe to the RSS feed and post your own comments when a topic resonates or annoys you.
- Engipreneur Group. This is the place where business gets done. Hosted by LinkedIn, this group provides a place for fellow engipreneurs to collaborate on business opportunities, find an expert, or to gain peer feedback. Participation is limited to those with ties to the engineering field and an active LinkedIn account.
A little about me…
I was bit by the entrepreneurial bug as a teenager, helping my dad in the operations of his heavy equipment business. After going to college and becoming a civil engineer, I began to notice some serious problems in the way that most engineering companies are run and I looked for ways to apply entrepreneurial principles to the business of engineering. Over the course of the past 13 years, I have had the privilege of interacting with some of the best entrepreneurial engineers (aka “engipreneurs”) around. Their mentoring, combined with my own experience, is what I cover in the Engipreneur Blog.
Some may find it strange that I don’t own my own engineering company (I do have several other businesses), but I would argue that one doesn’t necessarily need to be a business owner to practice innovation, take calculated risks, foster collaboration, and any number of other attributes that are qualities of an entrepreneur. Some of the most entrepreneurial people I know work for someone else. At the same time, there are plenty of engineers out there who own their own businesses under the misconception that this makes them an entrepreneur – they need to read my blog. Anyway, I’m having way too much fun testing out my harebrained ideas on other people’s businesses!
I am the Director of Site Development at Ware Malcomb, an entrepreneurial-minded commercial real estate design firm headquartered in Irvine, California. My wife, Susan, and I live in Oceanside, California with our 2 dogs and a cat.
